For me, it is not about whether the company is big or small by itself. It is whether they have values and ethics that they will not compromise. This leads me to private companies since they are less willing to "sell out" to please outside parties. I like companies that stand for more than simply making a dollar more than last quarter.
Few public companies are willing to stay their course and maintain their core values and beliefs (if they have any ethics and values at all) regardless of what Wall Street says about them. Many seem to define ethical behavior as anything that is legal and the only thing they value is money. It doesn't have to be that way.

I know they get the entire take by buying it directly from them. That seems only logical. I was just wondering what they, or the 'average artist', gets from regular store sales or iTunes sales. My thinking was trying to make sure they make more than they likely would through the traditional distribution method.
I was once told by a former employee of Sony Records that if you sent the artist 25 cents for each song you downloaded via p2p, they would make more money off of that than they do from the regular distribution method. I suspect the number is actually lower than that per song, though.
